Homer Recites the Last War
Homer recites the last war,
Small difference the amplification of far.
There is no echo, no nod of recognition.
Resonance finds no rapt reception.
Revered memories of heroic deed
Are lost when they most succeed.
Words in a vacuum are mouthed
In vain, to resurrect the renowned.
Did it matter, the burnt offering to God?
Is the solution a godless incendiary cloud?
Homer recites not for the dead,
But to bury in grateful living what we dread.
